The results are final for the November 6 gubernatorial election holding American citizens on their toes.
Laura Kelly, democrat, was elected governor for the state of Kansas (47.8%), defeating republican nominee Kris Kobach (43.3%) and independent nominee Greg Orman (6.5%). Kansas was one of 36 states who held their governor race in 2018.
Kelly will be Kansas’ third governor in a year, after Brownback was hired on the presidential staff of Donald Trump. Jeff Colyer took over for Brownback, but was defeated by Kobach in the gubernatorial primary election.
Kelly is the first democratic governor Kansas has elected since Mark Parkinson, in 2009. However, that does not change Kansas’ title of a republican state, completely.
The new house representatives elected for Kansas include Roger Marshall (R), Steve Watkins (R), Sharice Davids (D), and Ron Estes (R). Three of four Kansas house positions are held by the Republican party. Democrats now control the House of Representatives, gaining 32 seats.
