The excitement and thrill of March Madness has been a tradition for over 70 years. This is an opportunity for 68 Division I teams to compete for the opportunity to cut down the nets and hold the ever cherished trophy that is a piece of nylon.

The name “March Madness” comes from the infinite number of upsets that have caused screaming and a few tears in fans’ eyes. While a 16 seed has never beaten a 1 seed, since the most recent change of the NCAA tournament in 1985, a 15 seed has beaten a 2 seed eight times.

This strongly complicates the process of filling out a winning bracket, which many fans enjoy competing in. The probability of filling out a perfect bracket at random is less than one in a billion. Even though these chances are so slim, it is a fun way to compete with buds to see who can fill out the most correctly.

This year, Kansas is well represented by the three Division I schools all making it into the tournament. Kansas State acquired a 9 seed, Wichita State received a 4 seed, and Kansas earned the 1 seed. While none of us can predict exactly how things will play out, we can be sure to see some madness this march.
