Opening the season as the third-ranked tennis team in 4A, the Jags entered the season full of confidence. Returning was the state-qualifying doubles team of seniors Jason Reilly and Jason Thompson to lead the team, as well as the doubles team of senior Craig Koch and junior Jacob Wilson. With two solid doubles team, the strength of the team was clear from the start.

“It was cool to go so far at state last year, but we definitely want to win it this year, and I think we have a good chance because all of us can switch and play together. That helps us find out who is best together,” Reilly said.

The confidence of the doubles teams was evident from the start of the season, as their success led the Jags to a third overall finish at the Ark City invitational, with Thompson and Reilly capturing the gold in doubles. Another third place finish followed at the Andover invitational, with Thompson again capturing a gold in doubles, this time with Wilson. The ability of the doubles teams to mix and match players has become helped each player play up to their true ability. But, Reilly and Thompson tend to have the most success together, as they won the doubles gold at a home tournament, the second of the season for the duo.

“Being able to play with anyone in any tournament has definitely made this season more fun, like playing alongside Jacob was just to try something new, and not everyone gets that,” Thompson said.

The success of the Jags has been focused on the doubles teams, and all four players hop to qualify for state with regional contests coming up.
