After setting a high bar last year, the Jags cross country team has a lot to live up to, which means working harder than ever to succeed.
The team has competed in five meets to this point in Wichita, Emporia, Towanda, Lawrence, and Newton. Results have been mostly promising for a team lacking standout teammates that have graduated.
“I feel like we are less, for sure than last year. Week-to-week, we don’t have that ‘guy’ who can provide us that [top] 5 to take us all the way to State,” sophomore runner Brett Schoenhofer said.
With the team in need of everyone to get better, many of the runners are working hard to improve.
“I feel like I have really stepped it up from last year, and all of our top three have done so too,” Schoenhofer said.
Fellow sophomore runner Connor Seibel also feels that he has improved from the previous year.
“I feel pretty good about how I am doing. I got 13th place at one meet, and our team got 1st place at the Circle Invitational,” Seibel said.
The coaching staff is also happy to see the individual improvement from many of the runners.
“We have had some great performances, quite a few of our boys did really well at the Rimrock Meet,” head coach Kevin Wiebe said. “We have also had lots of personal records this year. Monte [Christo] broke 17 last week. So everyone is working hard.”
The team has only a few competitions left to get where they want to go.
“We have one more regular season meet, then league, regionals, and State,” Wiebe said.
The coaching staff continues to work hard to help the runners progress.
“The bottom half of our guys have a little work to do, but I feel like Wiebe is really starting to prepare us and get those guys to where they need to be in order for us to succeed,” Schoenhofer said.
Seibel enjoys the camaraderie on the team and is excited to finish out the season.
“We are doing pretty good. Having a lot of fun. We have a fun group,” Seibel said.
