The Jags boys basketball team went to Chanute on Thursday January 17th for a three day tournament. The Jags came in as returning champions of the tournament and were able to secure another tournament victory after beating Leavenworth, Republic, and Olathe North.
“Overall we played pretty well together,” Jerome Washington, junior center, said.
The boys beat all their opponents by over 10 points during the weekend.
“I thought we played well, We didn’t score the ball well especially in the first game, but our defense was really good and kept us in the game. That ended up being as tough as any of the three,” Head boys basketball coach Jesse Herrmann said.
Washington agreed.

The Jags stayed overnight in hotels in Chanute for two nights.
“At the hotel a lot happens, bonding time pretty much, we talked to each other and to other teams a lot,” Washington said.
Due to the tournament being 2 hours away, very few Central students attended.
“The first game we played was the early game. We call that game the morgue because it feels like a dead environment. We talked about it to our guys and told them it would be a lot like practice that week. But you know Chanute did well in that tournament and that always helps the atmosphere because a lot of Chanute people are there,” Herrmann said.
The team had to relay on each others plays to find a rhythm in the game, rather than the crowd.
“There was not a lot of people in the crowd so it was like really quite and there wasn’t any energy so we had to create it for ourselves,” Washington said.
The Jags won the tournament for the second year in a row and currently sit at a record of 11-1. The boys play Campus at home on Tuesday, January 29th at 7:30.
