For the first time in school history the Jags football team started the season 4-0. Under first year head coach Derek Tuttle the Jags rallied together and look to put together a run late into the postseason they have outscored opponents 120-44.
“This team has been different because everyone has bought in to their role and they have done their roles well,” senior captain Trey DeGarmo said.
The Jags averaged almost 400 yards a game so far into the season and have scored 15 total touchdowns.
“We are so successful because everyone has made sure to get better from every mistake made. If you only talk bad about the mistakes and don’t fix it then there is no improvement,” DeGarmo said.
The team regularly watches film on opponents and practices new plays in practice to prepare each week for the new teams they play.
“This is the closest team I’ve ever been a part of,” senior captain Ty Herrmann said, “Everyone is focused on winning every week and works to be better constantly.”
The Jags take on Maize South High School on Friday October 4 and look to defeat the Mavericks for the first time in school history. Both teams enter the game 4-0 and are Varsity Kansas’s game of the week. Last year, Maize South defeated the Jags 21-20 with a late 4th quarter touchdown.
“I’ve never wanted to beat a team more than I want to beat [Maize South],”DeGarmo said, “…we are playing with nothing to lose, and with that mindset nobody can stop us.”
