The girls’ basketball team won the 44th Annual Newton Invitational midseason tournament at Newton High School, all by double digits. They defeated Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Garden City, and Dodge City, and the players say that teamwork was a key factor for that.
The team did all the little things and that is why Ellie Stearns, sophomore, says they were so successful.
“We worked hard and well as a team and shared the ball. Our defense was also a key part of our success. Our shots were just falling too,” Stearns said.
Brittany Harshaw, sophomore, helped lead the team with 16 points per game over the course of the tournament.
“We played really well together and made the extra pass. On defense, we worked on pressuring the ball and getting in passing lanes. We played with energy and encouraged each other to be their best. As a result of our play I got open shots and was able to knock them down,” Harshaw said.
The team’s leading rebounder Maddie Amekporfor attributes their play to their team chemistry building.
“I think we have been improving by learning to play with each of my teammates helped us improve and we have to keep playing together and hard each game to keep being successful and keep our winning streak alive,” Amekporfor said.
The girls are 12-1 on the season with their upcoming game on Friday vs. Arkansas City.
