The wrestling team had two male and one female qualifier for the state wrestling tournament These qualifiers were Bronx Wood, freshman, and Murphy Ownbey, senior and Xara Bacci, sophomore, who qualified for the first girls state wrestling tournament in Salina.
Bacci took 2nd in the tournament in Salina ending her season with a 29-4 record
Wood was excited for the opportunity to make state as a freshman and felt that it was a testament to how hard he’s worked.
“To get to go to state is an honor it’s really amazing especially when you’re a freshman is really amazing. Especially when you’re a freshman placing with some of the best guys in the state. It’s crazy, but making it to state is a great feeling. I feel super blessed that I get to go to state and it’s just wild. I feel like I’ve worked my whole wrestling career and have earned it,” he said.
Ownbey was happy to see his hard work pay off as a senior.
“Regionals went really well, we had two people make it so state. We have been working really hard this year, and as a senior to make state it just means that all your hard work has paid off and you are going against kids that have been wrestling their whole lives. So starting in middle school, it’s nice to have that gratification or just that payback to see that what you’ve done wasn’t all for nothing. To make state means that you are in the top 16 in the state, so hopefully that means that both Bronx and I will go out and get a medal there,” he said.
The boys state meet was held at Hartman Arena in Park City on February 28 and 29, 2020. Neither of the boys placed.
