NFL draft goes online

With everything else in the sports world on pause, the 2020 NFL Draft proceeded as scheduled, but it looked a lot different this year. All the members of NFL front offices communicated in their own homes with Head Coaches and General Managers on live camera. Some teams did well with their picks and other teams, not so much. With the sports world on pause the NFL Draft was a glimpse back into normalcy for the sports world.
One of the winners from the draft was the Kansas City Chiefs. They used their first-round pick on Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a running back out of the national championship-winning LSU Tigers. They also addressed their vacancy at linebacker, left by the departure of 2019 starting linebacker Reggie Ragland, by drafting Willie Gay Jr., an interior linebacker out of Mississippi State. The Chiefs were also barely over the cap limit this offseason and they hoped to get cheaper at Left Tackle, who is currently played by Eric Fisher who makes $12 million, by drafting Lucas Niang out of TCU.
“I think the Chiefs did a really good job drafting again this year. I am really excited about Edwards-Helaire in our offense and I think our front office has been doing a really good job drafting the last few years and hopefully it translates to another Super Bowl,” Jack Bell, junior, said.
A loser from this year’s draft was the Green Bay Packers. One of their obvious needs was the linebacker position after giving up 285 rushing yards in the NFC Championship Game. They decided to use their first-round pick on Jordan Love, quarterback from Utah State. This pick left many Packers’ fans stunned, because they currently have a Hall of Fame quarterback who is under contract for two more years, Aaron Rodgers. They also spent their second-round pick on AJ Dillon, running back from Boston College, after Aaron Jones just had a career year at the same position.
“I was pretty angry with the Jordan Love pick. Aaron Rodgers is still performing at an elite level. We didn’t attend to hardly any of our team’s needs. I feel like we could have drafted someone more useful like Patrick Queen (linebacker, LSU) or Denzel Mims (wide receiver, Baylor),” PJ Damico, sophomore said.
Some other winners from the draft are the Cincinnati Bengals and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted their quarterback of the future, Joe Burrow, out of LSU and paired him with a athletic wide receiver in Tee Higgins, from Clemson, while taking care of the team’s other needs in the later rounds. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted one of the best offensive tackles in the draft at the number 14 spot in the first round, Tristen Wirfs, to protect their new quarterback, Tom Brady. They also selected Antione Winfield Jr. out of Minnesota in the second round. Winfield is widely considered the second best safety in the draft and could turn out to be one of the best value picks from this year’s draft.
“The Bengals have really set themselves up for the future by getting their quarterback of the future in Joe Burrow, and putting pieces around him to succeed,” Bronx Wood, freshman, said.
The 2020 NFL Draft was held April 23-25, 2020. While it might not have looked the same, some teams took care of some serious needs and set their teams up for success in the future.
