No-Shave-November originated in purpose to bring awareness to cancer patients’ struggle with hair loss. However, as the tradition continues, the meaning becomes lost in the excitement of the holiday season.
The trend is highly popular across social media. Alexander Dalmaso, sophomore, noticed the trend and decided to join in.
“The reason I do NSN is because everyone else does it. I’m not sure why everyone does it but it’s a funny thing for internet-users to do,” Dalmaso said.
Typically, NSN is directed towards facial hair, but girls such as Brooklyn Strobel, senior, participate to prove people wrong.
“I did it because I think it’s funny. Even though going a month without shaving your legs is kind of gross, there’s a good reason for it. I do plan on doing it again this year because all my friends told me I wouldn’t–so I am,” Strobel said.
Two years ago, Daija Wilson, sophomore, dealt with the struggles of a family member battling cancer. She finds that NSN does not have to mean something to all those who participate, but it has always meant something to her.
“I do NSN in honor of my mom who had cancer. It also helps that it’s cold outside so I’m not walking around in shorts anyways, leaving me comfortable doing it,” Wilson said.
Cancer patients become a source of encouragement for those who participate in NSN. Whether they know of a patient or not, participants like Stephan Anthemides, do it for patients and the amount of diverse struggles they deal with.
“NSN is supposed to bring awareness to patients who go bald because of the chemotherapy so I have a lot of respect towards them and their ability to fight the disease and defeat the odds that are stacked against them,” Anthemides said.
Across the nation, November is a time to reflect on the blessings of life that are typically ignored. Because of the trend “No Shave November” through social media: schools, businesses, and in homes; people ditch razors to reflect on the fact that even a strand of hair is a blessing that can easily be taken away.
