The choir and band participate in many events and prepare for events in the future.
The choir sung the National Anthem to players and fans at the basketball games.
“In acapella we sing the National Anthem at every home basketball boys basketball game, it is kinda crazy because it’s a bigger crowd than most of the ones we perform for,” junior Wesley Detter said.
Along with their weekly performances, the choir had the opportunity to sing on KAKE news.
“In December we went and sang for KAKE news which was a super fun experience seeing the behind the scenes of a news station,” junior Jaden Lyon said.
The choir was invited to sing at the MLK ceremony in January.
“We sung at McConnell Air Force Base for their MLK ceremony which was special and went very well,” choir teacher Julia Miller said.
Others reflect on the experience.
“Singing at the MLK celebration was an honor, it was cool to know that the music we perform can have an impact on almost any audience or any occasion we perform for. They also invited us to a lunch afterwards which was one of the best parts,” Detter said.
Along with performances, auditions took place.
“We had tryouts mid February. Auditions are always nerve racking because they determine if you are in choir or not,” sophomore Joe Little said.
They also prepare for later performances.
“We are preparing for our major competitions in April,” Miller said.
Similar to the choir, band gets ready for upcoming festivals and performances.
“In February we have the Friends University jazz festival, where both jazz bands will be playing. Also, the symphonic band is playing at Friends University with composer Robert Buckley,” band teacher Bryan Kird said.
Students get ready for the upcoming events.
“We are practicing our music for the competitions coming up like jazz festival, our competitions in March, and the festival in April. Our new music is really interesting and will definitely challenge all of our sections playing abilities,” sophomore Maryn Wilkerson said.
The band prepares for their major competitions later in the year
“In the next few weeks we are preparing for an ensemble festival with 10 solos/ensembles. About 14 students interested in taking a solo for solo ensemble festival which is in early april,” Kirk said.
Both band and choir focus on their upcoming events and their competitions in April.
